İngilizcede kelime sırası katı olduğu için vurgu özel yapılarla yaratılır: devrik yapı (inversion), vurgulu cümleler (cleft sentences) ve vurgulayıcı do. Bu araçlar konuşmalarda, denemelerde, gazetecilikte ve edebiyatta yaygındır; IELTS konuşma bölümünde ise yerinde kullanıldığında yüksek puanın göstergelerindendir.
Olumsuz zarflardan sonra devrik yapı
Olumsuz ya da sınırlayıcı bir ifade cümlenin başına geçtiğinde ardından soru kelime sırası gelir: yardımcı fiil öznenin önüne geçer. Yardımcı fiil yoksa (Present ve Past Simple), do/does/did eklenir: Rarely does he complain.
- Negative adverbialolumsuz ya da sınırlayıcı ifade: Never, Rarely, Seldom, Not only, Only then, Under no circumstances …

Vurgulu cümleler (cleft) ve vurgulayıcı do
Cleft (bölünmüş) cümlede önemli kısım öne çıksın diye bir cümle ikiye ayrılır. It-cleft: It is/was + vurgulanan kısım + who/that … What-cleft: What + özne + fiil + is/was + vurgulanan kısım. Vurgulayıcı do/does/did ise olumlu cümlede itirazı ya da içtenliği güçlendirir: I do understand your concern. («Gerçekten anlıyorum.»)
