Craft and Structure: kelime, amaç ve iki metin

Reading and Writing'in ilk soru grubu: bağlamda kelime anlamı, metnin amacı ve yapısı, iki metin arasındaki ilişki — stratejiler ve özgün SAT tarzı alıştırmalarla.

Bir Reading and Writing modülünü açtığında ilk gördüğün sorular Craft and Structure alanına aittir: yaklaşık 13–15 soru, yani bölümün yüzde 28'i.

Words in ContextWhich choice completes the text with the most logical and precise word?boşluğun etrafındaki ipuçları
Text Structure and PurposeWhich choice best states the main purpose of the text?yazar ne yapıyor: açıklıyor, karşılaştırıyor, itiraz ediyor…

Words in Context: kelime seçmek

  1. 1
    Seçeneklere bakmadan oku

Önce metnin tamamını seçeneklere bakmadan oku; seçenekler düşünceni yanlış yöne çekebilir.

  2. 2
    İpucunu bul

İki nokta (:) açıklama geleceğini, although ve but zıtlığı, because ve so neden-sonucu gösterir.

  3. 3
    Kendi kelimeni bul

Boşluğa kendi basit kelimeni koy, ana dilinde bile olabilir: örneğin “tasarruflu”.

  4. 4

Alıştırma 1: Words in Context

Although the architect's first designs were dismissed as impractical, her later buildings proved remarkably ______: engineers found that they used less material and cost less to maintain than conventional structures of the same size.

A) ornate
B) efficient
C) controversial
D) fragile

Kendi kelimemiz: “tasarruflu, verimli”.
Cevap: B) efficient. A) ornate (süslü) ve C) controversial (tartışmalı) açıklamaya uymaz, D) fragile (kırılgan) ise olumsuz anlamlıdır.

Text Structure and Purpose: yazar ne yapıyor?

Seçeneklerdeki fiillere dikkat et: describe, argue, challenge, illustrate, compare.

Alıştırma 2: cümlenin işlevi

Gerçek sınavdaki gibi metin ve soru İngilizcedir. Kalın yazılmış cümlenin rolünü belirle.

Despite their name, the mud volcanoes of Azerbaijan have nothing to do with lava; they release gas, water and cool mud from deep underground. Although some eruptions are violent enough to send flames into the air, most of the time these volcanoes simply bubble quietly. Geologists study them because the gases and mud they bring up can reveal what lies in rock layers far below the surface.

Which choice best describes the function of the bolded sentence in the text as a whole?
A) It explains why geologists are interested in mud volcanoes.
B) It corrects a possible impression about how the volcanoes usually behave.
C) It introduces a disagreement among geologists.
D) It compares mud volcanoes with volcanoes that produce lava.

Cümle, bazı patlamaların şiddetli olduğunu ama volkanların çoğu zaman sessizce fokurdadığını söylüyor. Yani okurda oluşabilecek “bu volkanlar hep tehlikelidir” izlenimini düzeltiyor.
A — jeologların ilgisi sonraki cümlede açıklanıyor.
C — bir anlaşmazlık yok.
D — lavla karşılaştırma ilk cümlede.
Cevap: B.

Cross-Text Connections: iki metin

Text 1: Many city planners argue that new bike lanes mainly serve people who already cycle. In their view, lanes rarely persuade drivers to leave their cars at home, so the money would do more good if it were spent on buses.
Text 2: Researchers who study urban transport point out that isolated lanes and connected networks are not the same. A few separate lanes may indeed attract only experienced cyclists, they argue, but a protected network linking homes to schools and offices can persuade new riders to try cycling.

Based on the texts, how would the researchers in Text 2 most likely respond to the planners' view in Text 1?
A) By agreeing that the money should be spent on buses instead
B) By arguing that the view may apply to isolated lanes but not to connected networks
C) By claiming that drivers never change their travel habits
D) By suggesting that experienced cyclists do not use bike lanes

A — Text 2 otobüslerden söz etmiyor. D — metinde yok.
Cevap: B.

Önemli noktalar

  • Craft and Structure her modülün başındadır ve bölümün yaklaşık yüzde 28'ini oluşturur.
