In this lesson you will learn

  • explain how a plate narrows or clarifies a sign
  • read the plates of groups 7.1–7.6
  • recognise special plates such as 7.13 and 7.14

Sometimes a sign is not alone — below it hangs a small white plate with a black border. A plate clarifies or limits the effect of the sign it goes with (Article 68.I): where, when, for whom. It is placed directly under the sign; when the sign hangs over the carriageway, plates 7.2.2–7.2.4 and 7.13 may be beside it (Article 68.II).

8.00 - 17.00No stopping…for lorries only…from 8.00 to 17.00
The plates narrow the sign: the ban is only for lorries and only between 8.00 and 17.00.

Distance, zone, direction (7.1–7.3)

  • 7.1.1 — distance from the sign to the place (danger, start of a ban); 7.1.2 — distance to a STOP sign 2.5; 7.1.3 / 7.1.4 — distance and direction to a place to the side.
  • 7.2.1–7.2.7 — the zone of the sign: 7.2.1 — its length; 7.2.2 — the zone starts here and runs this far; 7.2.3 — end of the zone; 7.2.4 — you are inside the zone, which extends both ways. The zones of 3.16, 3.26 and 3.27–3.30 can be shortened with these plates (Article 64.VIII).
  • 7.3.1–7.3.3 — direction of application: which way a stopping or standing ban at the roadside extends.

For whom and when (7.4, 7.5)

7.4.1–7.4.8 — the sign applies only to the type of vehicle shown: lorries, lorries with trailers, cars, buses, tractors, motorcycles, bicycles, small electric vehicles. 7.5.1–7.5.7 — the days and hours when the sign applies: Saturdays, Sundays and holidays, working days, days of the week, a time range. 7.5.8 «Service parking place» and 7.5.9 parking for charging electric vehicles were added in 2024.

Parking, mass and other plates

  • 7.6.1–7.6.9 — how to park at a 5.15 parking place: at the edge of the carriageway, with one or both wheels on the pavement, lengthwise or across.
  • 7.7 — parking with the engine off; 7.8 — paid services (new design since 2024); 7.9 — limited parking time; 7.10 — vehicle inspection place.
  • 7.11 — the sign applies only to vehicles whose permitted maximum mass exceeds the figure; 7.12 — dangerous road edge (driving onto the shoulder is dangerous).
  • 7.13 — the direction of the main road at the junction (thick line); 7.14 — the sign applies only to the lane shown.
  • 7.15 — blind pedestrians cross here; 7.16 — the sign applies only when the road surface is wet; 7.17 / 7.18 — for persons with disabilities / except them; 7.19 — drive with dipped headlights.

Who does it apply to?

Problem

Under sign 3.20 «No overtaking» there is plate 7.4.1 (a lorry). Elvin drives a car. May he overtake the slow tractor ahead?

Show solutionHide solution

Solution

7.4.1 limits the sign to lorries only (Article 68.I). For a car the ban does not apply — if nothing else forbids it (a solid line, a bend, poor visibility), Elvin may overtake following the overtaking rules.

Remember

  • A plate clarifies or limits the sign and is placed directly under it.
  • 7.1 — distance, 7.2 — zone, 7.3 — direction, 7.4 — vehicle type, 7.5 — time, 7.6 — how to park.
  • 7.13 shows the direction of the main road, 7.14 the lane the sign applies to.
  • 7.16 — the sign applies only on a wet road; 7.11 — only to vehicles heavier than shown.
