A driving licence is issued to a person who passes two tests: first the theory test on the rules of the road, then the practical driving test. This course prepares you for the first. The theory test has only 10 questions, but they are drawn from all the rules — so we study every topic on its own.
How the test works
The rules of the test are in Instruction No. Q16-001-12 of the Ministry of Internal Affairs (Annex 7 — «Method of the theory test»). The test is taken on a computer at a registration and examination centre (QİM); the program determines the result.
| What | Rule | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Number of questions | 10 questions — on all the rules, safety and first aid | Metodika 2.2 |
| Time | 15 minutes | Metodika 3.3 |
| Answer | you choose the one correct answer from the options | Metodika 3.4 |
| Pass mark | 9 of 10 correct — «pass»; 2 mistakes or running out of the 15 minutes — «fail» | Metodika 3.5 |
| Retake | not earlier than 7 days later | Instruction 5.9 |
Documents and the way to the test
For categories «A» and «B» and sub-categories «A1» and «B1» you may prepare for the tests on your own; for the other categories a driver-training course is compulsory (Law, Article 35.I-I). A self-prepared candidate is admitted to the tests within three days of applying to the QİM (Article 35.IV).
Documents
Identity card, a medical certificate, proof that the state fee is paid; for course students, the training centre’s certificate (Article 35.II). Documents can also be sent online (Article 35.III).
Theory test
10 questions, 15 minutes, at least 9 correct. If you fail, the retake is not earlier than 7 days (Instruction 5.9).
Practical test
For «B», in a manual or an automatic car: passing in an automatic gives the right to drive automatics only (Article 35.IV-II).
Licence
After passing both tests the licence is issued within 30 minutes (Article 35.V).
Categories and minimum ages
| Category | What you may drive | Age |
|---|---|---|
| A1 | mopeds; motorcycles, tricycles and light quadricycles up to 125 cm³ and 11 kW | 16 |
| A | all motorcycles | 18 |
| B | cars up to 3,500 kg permitted maximum mass with up to 8 seats besides the driver; with a trailer up to 750 kg | 18 |
| C1 / C | lorries over 3,500 kg (C1 — up to 7,500 kg) | 18 |
| BE | «B» cars with a trailer heavier than 750 kg | 19 (1 year of experience) |
| D1 / D | buses (D1 — 9 to 16 seats) | 23 (5 years of experience) |
A licence is valid for 10 years for people under 60; from 60 it is valid until the age of 70, and from 70 for 2 years at a time (Article 34.V). The entries are written in the state language and in English.
Which category?
Problem
Aysel is 17 and wants to sign up for the «B» theory test. Murad is 18 and wants to drive the family car with a 1,200 kg trailer (the car’s unladen mass is 1,300 kg; the permitted maximum mass of the combination is 3,300 kg). What can each of them do?
Show solutionHide solution
Solution
2) The trailer is over 750 kg but lighter than the car’s unladen mass (1,300 kg), and the combination is not over 3,500 kg — that is inside category «B» (Article 34.IV.3). Murad does not need «BE».
How to prepare with this course
- Take the lessons in order: terms and signs first, then manoeuvres, junctions, speed and stopping.
- After each lesson take its topic test: 10 questions, 15 minutes — like the real test.
- Finish with mixed tickets; review the questions you missed in «My mistakes».
- The road-signs page has every sign in one place — look up any sign you do not recognise.
Remember
- Theory test: 10 questions, 15 minutes, at least 9 correct to pass; 2 mistakes mean a fail.
- A retake is not earlier than 7 days; a self-prepared candidate who fails twice must take a course.
- Minimum age: 18 for «B» and «A», 16 for «A1» and mopeds, 23 for «D».
- A licence is valid for 10 years under the age of 60 and is issued within 30 minutes of passing.
