In this lesson you will learn

  • recognise the prohibitory signs and their exceptions
  • work out where a sign stops applying
  • tell «No stopping» from «No standing»

A prohibitory sign imposes a restriction or lifts one (Article 64.I). The shape is a circle: white background, red border. The «No stopping / No standing» signs (3.27–3.30) have a blue background; 3.1 and the «end of» signs (3.21, 3.23, 3.25, 3.31) have their own colour design (Article 64.II).

Bans on entry and traffic

  • 3.1 «No entry» — no vehicle may enter in this direction (usually at the far end of a one-way road).
  • 3.2 «No vehicles» — all vehicles are banned; 3.3–3.9 — only the type pictured (motor vehicles, lorries, motorcycles, tractors, vehicles with trailers, horse carts, bicycles).
  • 3.2–3.9, 3.34 and 3.35 ban traffic in both directions (Article 64.IV). 3.10 bans pedestrians and applies only on the side where it stands (Article 64.IX).

Size limits and controls

3.11–3.15 ban vehicles (with their load) heavier, with a heavier axle load, higher, wider or longer than the figure on the sign. 3.16 — do not drive closer than the distance shown. At 3.17.1 «Customs» and 3.17.2 «Danger» you may not pass without stopping.

Manoeuvres, overtaking and speed

  • 3.18.1 / 3.18.2 — no right / left turn; they apply to the junction in front of which they stand (Article 64.V.5). 3.19 — no U-turn.
  • 3.20 — no overtaking for all vehicles; 3.22 — no overtaking by lorries. Their zones end with 3.21 / 3.23.
  • 3.24 — do not exceed the speed shown (km/h); 3.25 ends its zone. 3.33 — separate limits by vehicle category.
  • 3.26 — no use of the horn (except to prevent a crash).

How far a sign works

Signs 3.16, 3.20, 3.22, 3.24, 3.26–3.30 apply from where they stand to the nearest junction, and in a built-up area without junctions — to the end of the area. Exits from adjacent areas, field and forest tracks and crossings with unsigned minor roads do not end the zone (Article 64.VI).

Ain force — up to the junctionyard exit
Article 64.VI: 3.16, 3.20, 3.22, 3.24, 3.26–3.30 act up to the nearest junction; yard exits do not change this.
  • A zone can be shortened: for 3.16 and 3.26 — plate 7.2.1; for 3.20, 3.22, 3.24 — signs 3.21, 3.23, 3.25 or 7.2.1; 3.24 can also be replaced by another 3.24 with a new figure (Article 64.VIII).
  • A 3.24 placed before a built-up area marked with 5.22 applies up to that 5.22 sign (Article 64.VII).
  • 3.31 — end of all restrictions: the limits of 3.16, 3.20, 3.22, 3.24 and 3.26 end together.

Stopping and standing

3.27 «No stopping» (red X on blue) bans both stopping and standing; 3.28 «No standing» (one line) bans only standing — you may stop to let people in or out. 3.29 bans standing on odd days of the month, 3.30 on even days. These four apply only to the side where they stand (Article 64.IX); 3.28–3.30 do not apply to a vehicle with the «Person with disability» identification sign (Article 64.V.4).

The yellow line 1.4 may be painted together with 3.27, and the yellow 1.10 with 3.28 — then the zone is as long as the line (Article 64.VIII.3). 3.32 — a reserved parking place; 3.34 bans vehicles with dangerous goods, 3.35 those with explosive or flammable loads.

Which sign, which side?

Problem

On the right side of the street there is sign 3.28; on the left side there is no sign. Elvin wants to stop on the right to drop his mother at home, then leave the car for 2 hours. What should he do?

Show solutionHide solution

Solution

1) 3.28 bans only standing — he may stop on the right to drop his mother.
2) Leaving the car for 2 hours is standing; not on the right.
3) The sign applies only to its side (64.IX) — if nothing else forbids it, he may park on the other side of the road (on a two-way road you park on the right-hand edge in your direction of travel — see the lesson «Stopping and parking»).

Remember

  • A prohibitory sign is a circle with a red border; the stopping and standing signs have a blue background.
  • 3.16, 3.20, 3.22, 3.24, 3.26–3.30 act to the nearest junction; yard exits do not end the zone.
  • 3.18.1 and 3.18.2 apply to the junction they stand before.
  • 3.27 — neither stopping nor standing; 3.28 — stopping yes, standing no; both apply only to their side.
  • 3.2 and 3.28–3.30 do not apply to vehicles with the «Person with disability» sign; there is no exception for taxis or buses.
