In this lesson you will learn

  • work out which road is the main road
  • find the order on equal roads with the right-hand rule
  • act correctly at roundabouts and with trams

At an unregulated junction there is no controller, and the lights are absent, off or flashing amber (Articles 1.13, 75.IV). The order is set by the priority signs and the rules in this lesson.

Main roadDefinition

A road marked by signs (2.1, 2.3.x) relative to the road it meets; a road with a hard surface relative to a dirt road; any road relative to an exit from a yard or other adjacent land. A short paved stretch on a minor road just before the junction does not make it equal (Article 1.9).

Main and minor roads

  • A driver on the minor road gives way to everyone approaching on the main road, wherever they are going (77.I).
  • If the main road changes direction at the junction (plate 7.13), drivers on the main road follow the equal-roads rules among themselves, and so do drivers on the minor roads (77.II).
  • If you cannot tell whether there is a hard surface (darkness, mud, snow) and there are no signs, assume you are on the minor road (77.V).
Signs that show the main road and where to give way — details in the «Priority signs» lesson.

Equal roads

Where equal roads cross, a trackless vehicle gives way to the one approaching from the right. A tram has priority over trackless vehicles whatever its direction; trams use the right-hand rule among themselves (77.III). A driver turning left or making a U-turn gives way to oncoming traffic going straight or right (77.IV).

ABC123
On equal roads, give way to the vehicle on your right (Article 77.III).

Roundabouts

Unless signs set a different priority, a driver entering a roundabout gives way to those already on the circle (42.XV). The extreme-position rule for turning does not apply at a roundabout (42.VI). The entry usually has sign 4.3 «Roundabout», sometimes with 2.4 «Give way».

AB
Unless signs say otherwise, a driver entering a roundabout gives way to those on the circle (Article 42.XV).

The tram turns right

Problem

At a crossing of equal roads you go straight, and a tram from your left turns right, across your path. Who goes first?

Show solutionHide solution

Solution

The tram. At a crossing of equal roads a tram has priority over trackless vehicles whatever its direction (77.III) — the right-hand rule does not apply to it.

Night, a muddy road

Problem

It is night, the road is muddy and there are no signs. You are approaching a junction and cannot tell whether your road is paved. How do you proceed?

Show solutionHide solution

Solution

You assume you are on the minor road and give way to everyone on the crossing road (77.V).

Remember

  • On the minor road, give way to everyone on the main road.
  • On equal roads give way to the right; the tram has priority.
  • Turning left or U-turning, give way to oncoming straight and right traffic.
  • Entering a roundabout, give way to those on it unless signs say otherwise.
  • If you cannot see the surface, treat yourself as on the minor road.
