Spelling rules and punctuation basics

Learn the rules жи-ши, ча-ща, чу-щу, how to check unstressed vowels and paired consonants, why не is written apart from verbs, the difference between -тся and -ться, and basic commas and dashes.

Check yourself
In this lesson you will learn
  • Apply the rules жи-ши, ча-ща, чу-щу and чк, чн
  • Check unstressed vowels and paired consonants with a test word
  • Write не apart from verbs and choose -тся/-ться with a question
  • Use commas with lists and forms of address, and a dash between two nouns

Russian spelling is not fully phonetic: we say [малако́] but write молоко́, we say [жыть] but write жить. The good news: most Russian spelling rules can be checked — you just need to know which question to ask and which word to test with. In this lesson you will learn the most important rules and the basics of punctuation in a simple sentence.

жи-ши, ча-ща, чу-щу

Remember from the first lesson: ж, ш are always hard and ч, щ are always soft. So there is no need to show hardness or softness after them, and Russian has a fixed rule: жи, ши are written with и, ча, ща with а, чу, щу with у. In the combinations чк, чн no ь is written.

RuleCorrectWrong
жи, ши — with ижить, маши́на, лы́жи, ши́нажыть, машына
ча, ща — with ача́шка, ча́сто, пло́щадь, ро́щачяшка, площядь
чу, щу — with учу́до, хочу́, щу́ка, ищу́чюдо, щюка
чк, чн — no ьру́чка, до́чка, то́чныйручька, точьный
Exceptions — a few borrowed words: жюри́ (jury), брошю́ра (brochure), парашю́т (parachute).

Unstressed vowels and paired consonants

An unstressed vowel is not heard clearly: in вода́ (water) we hear [a] but write о. To check it, change the word so that the doubtful vowel is stressed: вода́ → во́ды (waters). A consonant that is devoiced at the end of a word is checked the same way: change the word so that a vowel follows it: дуб → дубы́ (oak — oaks).

Doubtful spotTest wordResult
в_да́во́дывода́
л_са́ли́сылиса́
з_мля́зе́млиземля́
ду_дубы́дуб
гла_глаза́глаз
ло́_кало́жечкало́жка

не with verbs, -тся and -ться

не is written separately from verbs: не зна́ю, не могу́, не ви́дел (I don't know, I can't, I didn't see). Exceptions are verbs that don't exist without не: ненави́деть (to hate), негодова́ть (to be indignant), нездоро́виться (to feel unwell). For -тся vs -ться, ask a question to the verb: if the question has ь, the verb has ь too. Что де́лать? — учи́ться (to study: ь); Что де́лает? — у́чится (he studies: no ь).

QuestionSpellingExample
что де́лать?-тьсяЯ хочу́ учи́ться в Москве́.
что де́лает?-тсяБрат у́чится в шко́ле.
что сде́лать?-тьсяНа́до научи́ться пла́вать.
что сде́лает?-тсяОн ско́ро нау́чится пла́вать.

Punctuation in a simple sentence

  1. Lists are separated by commas, and there is a comma before а, но: Я купи́л хлеб, молоко́, сыр. Он ма́ленький, но си́льный. (He is small but strong.) No comma before a single и: хлеб и молоко́.
  2. A form of address is set off by commas: Ле́йла, иди́ сюда́! Приве́т, Мура́д! (Leyla, come here! Hi, Murad!)
  3. When both the subject and the predicate are nouns, a dash goes between them: Баку́ — столи́ца Азербайджа́на. If the subject is a pronoun, there is no dash: Он врач. (He is a doctor.)
  4. Direct speech uses «…» and a dash: «Я прие́ду за́втра», — сказа́л Мура́д. (“I'll come tomorrow,” said Murad.)
Wrong
Мы жывём в Баку.
Чяшка стоит на столе.
Я незнаю, где ручька.
Брат хорошо учиться.
Я хочу научится плавать.
Лейла иди сюда!
Баку столица Азербайджана.
Correct
Мы живём в Баку.
Чашка стоит на столе.
Я не знаю, где ручка.
Брат хорошо учится.
Я хочу научиться плавать.
Лейла, иди сюда!
Баку — столица Азербайджана.
Dictation

Зимо́й в на́шем го́роде иногда́ идёт снег. Де́ти ката́ются на лы́жах и на са́нках. Мой мла́дший брат ещё не уме́ет ката́ться, но он у́чится.

«Мура́д, иди́ домо́й!» — зовёт ма́ма. Ве́чером мы пьём чай из больши́х ча́шек и чита́ем кни́ги.

Listen, write the text down, then check yourself. Translation: “In winter it sometimes snows in our town. Children go skiing and sledging. My little brother can't ski yet, but he is learning. ‘Murad, come home!’ Mum calls. In the evening we drink tea from big cups and read books.” Find: жи, ча, -тся/-ться, не + verb, a form of address.
Task: find the mistakes

There are 5 mistakes in the note. Find and correct them:
Привет Айсель! Я незнаю, когда начинаеться урок. Мне нужна твоя ручька. Ты хочешь занимается вместе?
(Hi Aysel! I don't know when the lesson starts. I need your pen. Do you want to study together?)

Show solution
1) Привет, Айсель! — a form of address takes a comma.
2) не знаю — не is written apart from verbs.
3) начина́ется — что де́лает? → -тся.
4) ру́чка — no ь in чк.
5) занима́ться — хо́чешь что де́лать? → -ться.
Write the missing letters
  1. 1.машна
  2. 2.чшка
  3. 3.щка (ры́ба)
  4. 4.вда́ (во́ды)
  5. 5.ду (дубы́)
  6. 6.Брат хорошо́ у́чи.
  7. 7.Я хочу́ научи́ пла́вать.
  8. 8.Мне о́чень нра́ви э́та кни́га.

Key points

  • жи, ши — with и; ча, ща — with а; чу, щу — with у; чк, чн — no ь.
  • Check an unstressed vowel with stress and a paired consonant before a vowel: вода́ — во́ды, дуб — дубы́.
  • не is written apart from verbs (не зна́ю); exceptions: ненави́деть, негодова́ть.
  • If the question has ь, so does the verb: что де́лать? — учи́ться; что де́лает? — у́чится.
  • Commas: in lists, before а/но, around forms of address; a dash between two nouns: Баку́ — столи́ца.
