- Get the verb stem and the imperative from the infinitive
- Make positive and negative verb forms
- Choose person endings and predicative suffixes correctly
- Recognise the moods of the verb
A dictionary always lists verbs like this: yazmaq (to write), oxumaq (to read), gəlmək (to come), görmək (to see). But in speech we say yazıram (I am writing), oxumadı (he didn't read), gələk (let's come), görsən (if you see). All these forms grow from one stem. The verb is the richest part of speech in Azerbaijani: hundreds of forms can be built from a single verb. In this lesson you will meet its main “spare parts”.
Infinitive and verb stem
The basic form of a verb, made with -maq, -mək: yazmaq (to write), gülmək (to laugh). It answers nə etmək? nə olmaq? (to do what? to become what?) and is the form found in dictionaries.
Drop -maq/-mək from the infinitive and you get the stem: yazmaq → yaz, gəlmək → gəl, oxumaq → oxu. The bare stem is also the 2nd person singular imperative: Yaz! (Write!), Gəl! (Come!), Oxu! (Read!). Every other form is made by adding suffixes to the stem.
Positive and negative
The negative is made with -ma, -mə, placed right after the stem: yaz-ma-q (not to write), gəl-mə-k; yazdı → yazmadı (he wrote → he didn't write), gəldi → gəlmədi. In the present tense the vowel of the negative suffix drops before -ır⁴: yazmıram (I'm not writing), gəlmirəm, oxumuram, görmürəm. A predicate that is a noun or adjective is negated with the word deyil: O, həkim deyil. — He is not a doctor.
| Positive | Negative | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| yazmaq | yazmamaq | to write — not to write |
| yaz! | yazma! | write! — don't write! |
| yazdım | yazmadım | I wrote — I didn't write |
| yazıram | yazmıram | I am writing — I am not writing |
| gəlirsən | gəlmirsən | you are coming — you are not coming |
| həkimdir | həkim deyil | is a doctor — is not a doctor |
Person endings
When a verb is the predicate, it takes a person ending that shows the person and number of the subject. That is why personal pronouns are often dropped: Məktəbə gedirəm — “I'm going to school” — needs no word for “I”. There are two types of person endings: type I is used in the present and future, in the reported past and with noun predicates; type II is used in the -dı⁴ past tense and the conditional.
| Person | Type I | Example: present | Example: noun predicate | Type II | Example: -dı⁴ past |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| mən | -am² / -yam² | gəlirəm | tələbəyəm | -m | gəldim |
| sən | -san² | gəlirsən | tələbəsən | -n | gəldin |
| o | -dır⁴ / — | gəlir | tələbədir | — | gəldi |
| biz | -ıq⁴ / -yıq⁴ | gəlirik | tələbəyik | -q / -k | gəldik |
| siz | -sınız⁴ | gəlirsiniz | tələbəsiniz | -nız⁴ | gəldiniz |
| onlar | -lar² | gəlirlər | tələbədirlər | -lar² | gəldilər |
Moods of the verb
The mood (feilin şəkli) shows the speaker's attitude to the action: it happens, is ordered, is wished for, depends on a condition, or is necessary. Azerbaijani has six moods. The tenses of the indicative mood are the topic of the next lesson.
| Mood | Suffix | Example | Meaning |
|---|---|---|---|
| Indicative (xəbər) | tense suffixes | yazıram, yazdı, yazacaq | I'm writing, he wrote, she will write |
| Imperative (əmr) | -ım⁴, —, -sın⁴, -aq², -ın⁴ (-ınız⁴), -sınlar⁴ | yazım, yaz, yazsın, yazaq, yazın, yazsınlar | let me write, write!, let him write, let's write… |
| Optative (arzu) | -a² | Kaş o da gələ. | If only he came too. |
| Conditional (şərt) | -sa² | Vaxtım olsa, gələrəm. | If I have time, I'll come. |
| Necessitative (vacib) | -malı² | Dərsimi oxumalıyam. | I must do my homework. |
| Obligative (lazım) | -ası² | Sabah Gəncəyə gedəsiyəm. | I am (due) to go to Ganja tomorrow. |
Form from the verb oxumaq (to read):
1) negative imperative, 2nd person singular
2) imperative, 1st person plural (let's…)
3) necessitative, 1st person singular (I must…)
4) present tense, negative, 1st person singular
