Spelling and punctuation

Learn the spelling rules people get wrong most often: the suffix -dır, the words də/da and ki, compound words, capital letters, commas and other punctuation marks.

Check yourself
In this lesson you will learn
  • Write words that sound like suffixes (də/da, ki) correctly
  • Write compound words solid, hyphenated or separately
  • Apply the rules for capital letters
  • Use commas, quotation marks and dashes correctly

Leyla texts her friend: Kitabım sən də qaldı? — which literally reads “Did my book stay, you too?” Aysel is puzzled. Leyla meant səndə — “with you”: Kitabım səndə qaldı? — “Did my book stay with you?” One space changed the meaning! Spelling (orfoqrafiya) covers how words are written, and punctuation (durğu işarələri) covers where marks go in a sentence. This lesson looks at the rules people break most often.

Compound words and capital letters

  • Written solid: compounds that create a new meaning — ayaqqabı (shoe), günəbaxan (sunflower), ağsaqqal (elder), qayınana (mother-in-law), dəvəquşu (ostrich); intensified adjectives — ağappaq, qapqara.
  • Hyphenated: paired words — ata-ana (parents), bacı-qardaş (brothers and sisters), qab-qacaq (dishes), gecə-gündüz (day and night); repetitions — tez-tez (often), yavaş-yavaş (slowly); approximate numbers — iki-üç (two or three), beş-altı; echo words with m — kitab-mitab (books and such).
  • Written separately: compound numbers — iyirmi beş (25); phrases with ən, lap, heç, hər, bir neçə — ən gözəl (the most beautiful), heç kim (nobody), hər gün (every day).
  • Capital letters: the first word of a sentence, personal names, geographical names (Xəzər dənizi — the Caspian Sea, Kür çayı — the Kura river, Böyük Qafqaz — the Greater Caucasus), names of states and organisations (Azərbaycan Respublikası, Bakı Dövlət Universiteti). Lower case: months and days (yanvar — January, bazar ertəsi — Monday), nationalities and languages (azərbaycanlı — Azerbaijani person, ingilis dili — English); but Azərbaycan dili, because of the country name.

Find and correct the mistakes:
salam aysel. kitabım sən də qalıb? mən də sabah gələcəm çünki müəlim deyib ki sinifə gəlmək lazımdı.
(Meaning: “Hi Aysel. Is my book with you? I'll come tomorrow too, because the teacher said we have to come to class.”)

Show solution
Salam, Aysel. — capitalise the first word and the name; set off the address with a comma.
Kitabım səndə qalıb? — the case ending is joined.
Mən də sabah gələcəyəm, — də here means “too”, so it stays separate; the standard form is gələcəyəm; comma before çünki.
çünki müəllim deyib ki, — double l; comma after ki.
sinfə gəlmək lazımdır. — sinif + ə → sinfə (the vowel drops); write -dır in full.
Spell it correctly: fill in the gaps
  1. 1.Kitabım qalıb? (sənin yanında)
  2. 2.Mən kinoya gedirəm. gəl! (sən + də ədatı)
  3. 3.Bu fikir çox (yaxşı + -dır⁴).
  4. 4.Sabah mütləq (gəlmək — qəti gələcək, I şəxs tək).
  5. 5.Bizim (sinif + -ə) yeni şagird gəlib.
  6. 6.Qonşumuzun (oğul + -u) məktəbə gedir.
  7. 7.Şagirdlərə dərs deyən şəxs adlanır.
  8. 8.Bilirəm sən haqlısan.

Key points

  • The particle də/da and the conjunction ki are separate; the case ending -da², the suffix -ki and the particle -mı⁴ are joined.
  • In writing use standard forms: yaxşıdır, gələcəyəm; kitab, şagird; sinfi, fikri; müəllim.
  • Compounds are written solid (ayaqqabı), hyphenated (ata-ana, tez-tez) or separately (iyirmi beş, ən gözəl).
  • Months, days, nationalities and languages are lower case: yanvar, ingilis dili.
  • Commas: around addresses and parenthetical words, after o/bu as subject, after ki, before amma/çünki.
