Working with a text: DİM closed text tasks

The 10 types of closed text tasks in the grade 11 and grade 9 school-leaving exams: a solving routine for each, the evidence rule and step-by-step worked examples on an original text.

Check yourself
In this lesson you will learn
  • Recognise the 10 types of DİM closed text tasks from their wording and explain what each one checks.
  • Check every statement against a specific sentence of the text and tell “true”, “false”, “probable” and “no information” apart.
  • Work out the contextual meaning of words and expressions, the logical links between sentences and which sentence fills each blank frame.
  • Choose combination options (1, 3, 5; 1 – a, d) quickly and safely by elimination.

In the grade 11 school-leaving exam, 20 of the 30 tasks in the Azerbaijani-language part are about texts: each of the two texts gets 5 closed and 5 written tasks. The 10 closed text tasks are worth 25 of the 100 points; in grade 9 the 16 closed text tasks are worth about 47 points. These tasks do not test memorised rules but careful reading: the statements in the options look very much like the text, yet often differ from it by one word — ilk dəfə (for the first time), yalnız (only), heç vaxt (never). In this lesson we solve all ten task types on one original text.

How a text block is built

In grade 11 the first text is literary and the second is journalistic or popular-science; each is about 320–350 words. Grade 9 also has two texts, but each gets 8 closed and 2 written tasks. A closed task has 5 options, and most are multi-statement tasks: the options give the numbers of the correct statements (1, 3, 5), a matching (1 – a, d; 2 – b) or an order (3, 1, 2). The text carries special marks: sentences with a number in front, words with a superscript number (¹ ²), expressions in bold or underlined, and blank frames [ ……… ]. As soon as you read a task, find its mark in the text.

Definition
The evidence rule

Count a statement as true only if you can point to the sentence of the text that confirms it. If there is no such sentence, the statement is either false (the text says the opposite), probable (the facts of the text suggest it, but it is not stated), or there is no information about it. Your own life experience and what you know about history or literature do not count as evidence here.

One routine and ten task types

  1. 1
    Read the questions first

Before the text, skim the wording of the tasks: whose speech, which numbered sentences, which words are asked about. Then you read the text already looking for them.

  2. 2

Keep track of the order of events, the characters and the author’s position; stop at every marked place and note it.

  3. 3
    Mark every statement

Without looking at the options, write D (true), Y (false), E (probable) or “?” next to each statement and note where its evidence sentence is.

  4. 4
    Eliminate

Start with a statement you are sure about: if it must not be in the answer, cross out every option that contains it. Usually 2–3 statements remove 4 of the 5 options.

  5. 5
    Final check

Compare every statement in the remaining option with the text once more and mark the right letter on the answer sheet.

№Wording of the task (in Azerbaijani)How to solve it
1Mətndə X-in nitqi əsasında onunla bağlı hansı qənaətə gəlmək olar?Pick out all of X’s lines. Each conclusion must rest on X’s own words; an idea that comes from the narrator’s description or from another character does not count. If the task says nitqi və hərəkətləri (speech and actions), take the actions into account too.
2Əvvəlində rəqəm yazılmış hansı cümlələr mətndən çıxarılsa, məntiqi ardıcıllıq pozulmaz?Read the text without the sentence. If the next sentence refers back to it (bu, o, həmin — this, that; isə, lakin — while, but; buna görə — so; an object named there for the first time) or if it gives the reason for a later action, it cannot be removed.
3Hansı cümlələrdə seçilmiş ifadənin kontekstə görə mənasına uyğun ifadə işlənmişdir?First write the meaning of the expression in the text in 2–3 words of your own, then explain the expression in each sentence and compare. A sentence that uses the same word literally is usually a trap.
4Mətnə əsasən uyğunluğu müəyyən edin: 1. Doğrudur 2. Yanlışdır 3. EhtimaldırTrue (doğrudur) — the text says it or it follows unambiguously. False (yanlışdır) — the text says the opposite. Probable (ehtimaldır) — the text neither confirms nor denies it, but its facts make it likely.
5Mətnə əsasən hansı hadisələrin səbəbini müəyyən etmək mümkündür?For each event look for its cause in the text: çünki (because), ona görə ki (so that), …dığı üçün (since …), or an earlier sentence that clearly gives the reason. If the text gives no cause, the answer is “not possible”, even if you could easily guess one from life.
6Mətnə əsasən uyğun fikirləri müəyyən edin: mətndə məlumat var / yoxdur“Information given” (var) only when you can underline the sentence that confirms the statement. A topic being mentioned is not yet information about that particular claim.
7Mətnə əsasən cədvəldə düzgün qeyd olunmuş fikirləri müəyyən edinTwo steps: first decide yourself whether the statement is true or false, then compare with the tick in the table. Only rows whose tick is correct go into the answer.
8Mətndə üzərində rəqəm yazılmış sözlər əsasında uyğunluğu müəyyən edinPut a synonym in place of the word to find its meaning in the text; then try the same synonym in the sentence of each item. One item may belong to neither word.
9Mətnə əsasən X ilə bağlı yanlış fikirləri müəyyən edinWrite D or Y next to each statement and choose the Y’s for the answer. Check statements with yalnız, həmişə, heç vaxt, ilk dəfə, tamamilə (only, always, never, for the first time, completely) with extra care.
10Mətndə boş çərçivələrin yerinə uyğun gələn cümlələrin ardıcıllığını müəyyən edinRead the sentences before and after each frame and find the “hooks”: a pronoun (bu, onlar — this, they), a conjunction, a repeated word, a time marker. Start with the clearest frame and cross out options.
DİM often prints tasks 5, 6 and 7 as a two-column table: the statements are already placed in the columns, and you choose the ones that are placed correctly.

The practice text: «Saatsaz» (The watchmaker)

Saatsaz

Şəkinin köhnə məhəlləsində, daş döşənmiş dar küçənin sonunda balaca bir emalatxana var idi. Onun sahibi Rəhim kişi qırx ildən artıq idi ki, burada saat təmir edirdi. Divarlardakı onlarla saat eyni anda tıqqıldayır, emalatxana sanki nəfəs alırdı. Pəncərənin önündəki köhnə taxta masada vintlər, yaylar, xırda çarxlar səliqə ilə düzülmüşdü. Rəhim kişi işləyəndə danışmağı xoşlamazdı, onun əvəzinə saatlar danışırdı. Məhəllədə deyirdilər ki, onun əlindən çıxan saat bir dəqiqə də geri qalmaz.

Nəvəsi Elvin bu yay Bakıdan gəlmişdi. Şəhərdə hər şey tələsirdi, burada isə zaman sanki yavaş axırdı.
Rəhim kişi böyüdücü şüşəni gözündən çəkmədi.
– Saat təkcə vaxtı göstərmir, bala. Bəzən insanın ömrünü saxlayır¹. Bunu sənə sözlə izah edə bilmərəm, gərək öz gözünlə görəsən.

1. Elvin çiyinlərini çəkib susdu. Ertəsi gün axşamüstü emalatxanaya on beş yaşlarında bir qız gəldi. Onun üzündə həm yorğunluq, həm də utancaqlıq vardı. 2. Qızın əlində köhnə bir cib saatı vardı, onun şüşəsi çatlamışdı. Qız saatı ehtiyatla piştaxtanın üstünə qoydu.
– Babamdan qalıb, – dedi. – Neçə ustaya apardım, hamısı «bunun hissəsi tapılmaz» deyib qaytardı. Siz də qaytarsanız, daha heç kimə aparmayacağam.
Rəhim kişi saatı ovcuna alıb xeyli baxdı. 3. Onun gözlərində bir işıq yandı. Sonra siyirmələri bir-bir açmağa başladı. [ ……… ]

[ ……… ] 4. Səhər Elvin emalatxanaya girəndə babasını hələ də stolun arxasında gördü. Masanın üstündəki cib saatı isə yenidən tıqqıldayırdı. Rəhim kişinin gözləri yorğunluqdan qızarmışdı, amma üzündə sakit bir təbəssüm vardı.

Günortaya yaxın qız gəldi. Saatı qulağına tutub uzun-uzun dinlədi, gözləri yaşardı. [ ……… ] Pul uzadanda Rəhim kişi əlini geri çəkdi:
– Bu saatı mən yox, sənin babana olan sevgin düzəltdi. Get, yaxşı saxla.

Qız gedəndən sonra emalatxanaya dərin bir sükut çökdü². Elvin divardakı saatlara baxdı. 5. İndi onların tıqqıltısı ona ürək döyüntüsü kimi gəlirdi. O, babasının yanında oturub astaca soruşdu:
– Baba, mənə də öyrədərsən?
Rəhim kişi gülümsədi və ona ən kiçik vintaçanı uzatdı. Elvin vintaçanı ovcunda sıxdı: bu, onun ilk dərsi idi.

The false ones are 2 and 4. Answer: E (2, 4).
Task 10. Look for the hooks.
Frame 1 follows siyirmələri bir-bir açmağa başladı (he began opening the drawers one by one): Onlardan birinin (in one of them) = one of the drawers → 3.
Frame 2 comes before the morning scene: Həmin gecə (that night) → Səhər (in the morning) → 1.
Frame 3 follows saatı qulağına tutub dinlədi (she held the watch to her ear and listened): Bu (this) = listening to the watch → 2.

For each statement find the evidence sentence first: present — true; the text says the opposite — false; not said, but the facts point to it — probable.

Key points

  • In a closed text task every statement must be proved by a specific sentence of the text; life experience is not evidence.
  • True — the text says it; false — the text says the opposite; probable — not said, but suggested by the facts.
  • Two-column table tasks take two steps: check the statement, then check its column (tick).
  • A sentence cannot be removed if the next sentence refers to it or if it gives the reason for a later action.
  • Test contextual meaning by substituting a synonym; the literal meaning of the same word is usually a trap.
  • Eliminate options with the statement you are sure about: one statement often removes 2–3 options at once.
