Dünən dostumla parka getdik, amma yağışa görə tez qayıtdıq. Ah, hətta dondurma yeməyə vaxtımız olmadı! — “Yesterday my friend and I went to the park, but because of the rain we came back early. Oh, we didn't even have time for ice cream!” Besides nouns and verbs, these sentences use many small words: dünən (yesterday), tez (early) — adverbs; ilə (with; in dostumla), görə (because of) — postpositions; amma (but) — a conjunction; hətta (even) — a particle; ah — an interjection. Without them the sentence falls apart. And in exams the hardest questions are about these words: the same word can be an adverb in one sentence and a postposition in another.
The adverb
An adverb (zərf) describes an action — how, when, where, how much and why it happens. It usually belongs to a verb, does not take case endings or the plural, and in a sentence it is usually an adverbial modifier (zərflik). By structure adverbs are simple (tez — quickly, indi — now), derived (ucadan — loudly, dostcasına — in a friendly way) or compound (yavaş-yavaş — slowly, birdən-birə — all of a sudden, get-gedə — gradually, üzbəüz — face to face).
| Kind of adverb | Question | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| Manner | necə? nə cür? | yavaş, tez, birdən, ucadan, piyada, dostcasına |
| Time | nə vaxt? nə zamandan? | indi, dünən, sabah, həmişə, hələ, bayaq |
| Place | harada? haraya? haradan? | yuxarı, aşağı, irəli, geri, içəri |
| Degree, quantity | nə qədər? | az, çox, xeyli, bir az, olduqca |
| Cause, purpose | niyə? nə üçün? | qəsdən, bilərəkdən, acığa |
Postpositions
A postposition (qoşma) comes after a noun, pronoun or verb form and links it to another word: dost üçün (for a friend), dərsdən sonra (after the lesson), səhərə qədər (until morning). It has no meaning of its own, does not answer a question by itself, and forms one sentence part together with the word before it. Each postposition requires the word before it to be in a particular case — its most important feature. Where English uses prepositions, Azerbaijani uses postpositions and case endings.
| Case required | Postpositions | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| Nominative (genitive with personal pronouns) | ilə (-la²), üçün, kimi, haqqında, barədə | qələm ilə (qələmlə), vətən üçün, aslan kimi, kitab haqqında; mənim üçün, onun kimi, bizimlə |
| Dative | qədər, dək, doğru, tərəf, görə, qarşı, baxmayaraq, nisbətən | axşama qədər, səhərə dək, dənizə doğru, evə tərəf, yağışa görə, küləyə qarşı, çətinliyə baxmayaraq |
| Ablative | sonra, əvvəl, qabaq, bəri, başqa, əlavə, ötrü, savayı | dərsdən sonra, yeməkdən əvvəl, səhərdən bəri, səndən başqa, bundan əlavə, səndən ötrü |
Conjunctions
Conjunctions (bağlayıcılar) join sentence parts of the same kind or the clauses of a complex sentence. Coordinating conjunctions join equal parts; subordinating ones attach a subordinate clause to the main clause. Punctuation depends on the conjunction: no comma before və (and), a comma before amma, lakin (but) and çünki (because), and a comma after ki (that).
| Type | Conjunctions | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Joining | və, ilə, həm... həm də, həmçinin | Aysel və Leyla gəldi. Həm oxuyur, həm də işləyir. |
| Contrast | amma, ancaq, lakin, fəqət, isə | Gəlmək istədim, amma vaxtım olmadı. Mən gəldim, o isə gəlmədi. |
| Alternative | ya... ya da, yaxud, və ya, gah... gah | Ya bu gün, ya da sabah zəng edərəm. Hava gah isti olur, gah soyuq. |
| Negative | nə... nə də | Nə məktub yazdı, nə də zəng etdi. |
| Subordinating | ki, çünki, əgər, madam ki, baxmayaraq ki, hərçənd, sanki, guya | Dərsə gecikdim, çünki avtobus gəlmədi. Əgər vaxtın olsa, bizə gəl. |
Particles, modal words and interjections
A particle (ədat) adds a shade of meaning to a word or sentence: it emphasises, limits, or expresses a question, affirmation, negation or wish. It is never a sentence part. Modal words (modal sözlər) show the speaker's attitude and are set off by commas as parenthetical words: Əlbəttə, gələcəyəm. — Of course I'll come. Sən, deyəsən, yorulmusan. — You seem to be tired. Interjections (nidalar) express feelings (ah, oh, vay, of, bəh-bəh, ura) or call someone (ey, ay, hey) and are separated by a comma or an exclamation mark: Ah, nə gözəl gündür! — Oh, what a lovely day! Ura! — Hurray! But ey, ay before a name are not separated from it: Ey dostlar! — Friends! Ay Leyla, bəri gəl! — Leyla, come here!
| Kind of particle | Particles | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Emphatic | axı, hətta, belə, lap | Axı mən sənə demişdim. Uşaqlar belə bunu bilir. |
| Limiting | ancaq, yalnız, təkcə | Bu sirri yalnız Aysel bilir. |
| Question | -mı⁴, məgər, bəyəm | Bu doğrudurmu? Məgər sən bilmirdin? |
| Yes and no | bəli, hə, xeyr, yox, deyil | — Gələcəksən? — Bəli. Bu, mənim kitabım deyil. |
| Wish and command | kaş, kaşki, qoy | Kaş yay tez gələ! Qoy uşaqlar oynasın. |
| Specifying | məhz, elə, düz | Mən məhz bunu deyirdim. Elə indi gəl. |

Key points
- Adverbs describe actions: manner, time, place, degree, cause and purpose.
- A quality word next to a noun is an adjective, next to a verb an adverb: yaxşı insan — yaxşı danışır.
- Postpositions govern cases: nominative (üçün, kimi, ilə), dative (qədər, görə, doğru), ablative (sonra, bəri, başqa).
- Conjunctions are coordinating (və, amma, ya... ya da, nə... nə də) or subordinating (ki, çünki, əgər).
- Particles add shades of meaning and are not sentence parts; modal words take commas; interjections are followed by a comma or exclamation mark.
